The RMV is not so awful to Jim, for some reason. When he discovered his license was 4 months expired, he just called them and they took care of it. Normal people would be hours waiting in line, he just spent a few minutes on hold.

There is always a distinct possibility in life that the "Danger, Cliff Approaching" sign will be hidden behind an inconveniently placed tree. However, you have to trust in the people that you care about that they will say to you, "Did you notice that cliff over there? Because it seems to be getting closer at an alarming rate." But then again, I am of the opinion that you really only need to be concerned about poorly-marked signage in Rhode Island. ("Freaking Rhode Island!")

Anyway, the mess dress issue is a pickle. Perhaps you could bring it to your mom's attention that so many of the modern tuxedo styles end up looking incredibly similar to a nice suit?

And I think you should keep in mind the fact that You Are The Bride. And if The Bride wants to wear an outfit that is ever-so-slightly more embellished than everyone else, So Be It.

To be completely honest, I think that the formal elements of the dress are not what may have attracted us, but they only add to the elements that you were specifically hoping for, and the ultimate thing is - the dress made you look Fabulous.
