Birthday. Cupcakes.

Ok. So. Meghan & I always try to find a cupcake shoppe on our respective birthdays because HEY, IT’S A BIRTHDAY and a birthday cannot be complete without cupcakes. BECAUSE WE SAY SO, THAT’S WHY. If the cupcakes are smallish, we splurge and get 4, cut them each in half, and then we each get a taste of all the cupcakes. If the cupcakes are largish, we just get two.

The problem is, our memories are like Swiss cheese (well, mine might be more like Jarlsberg, but I’m kind of a cheese snob), so we forget which cupcakes we got the year before. So I have to write this down before I forget.

We went to Sweet in Harvard Square. Technically, my birthday falls during their “winter” menu, so the special flavors are all about winter and the comforts thereof.

  • Snickerdoodle: a Sweet Cookie. “A Sweet take on the famous sugar cookie. Cinnamon-infused cake and frosting rolled in homemade sugar crystals.” Loved the cinnamonnyness of this one. And yes, that’s a word.
  • Angel Food with Maple Glaze: a Sweet Escape. “Have your cake and eat it too with Sweet’s cupcake version of the famous sponge cake. Topped with your choice of homemade whipped cream and fresh berries or a maple glaze drizzle with a spun sugar topping. Either way it is heavenly!” HOO BOY. Please, sir, can I have some more?
  • Hot Cocoa: a Winter Comfort. “Come in from the cold to Sweet’s rich, dark chocolate cake with homemade chocolate mousse inside, finished with a dollop of whipped cream, a dusting of cocoa and its own stirrer.” Whipped cream on top: winning. Stirrer: adorable. Definitely tasted like the cupcake version of a mug of hot cocoa, but it didn’t push all my happy buttons.
  • Organic Karat: a Daily Sweet. “Moist carrot cake with shredded organic carrots and crushed pineappleĀ topped with classic cream cheese frosting and an edible gold leaf petal.” Moist without being over-dense; surprisingly IMPROVED by the addition of a smear of from a chocolate frosting shot, which you can also purchase over-the-counter.

Ok. Dear Maple Glaze? You need to happen more often. Like, all the time. Angel Food with Maple Glaze is my hands-down favorite….this year!

And I’m already looking forward to the “spring” menu that will be here for Meghan’s birthday!
